Welcome to the oldest still existing church in the Netherlands, the Basilica of Saint Servatius at the Vrijthof. On this exact location there have been no less than four churches over the course of the previous centuries, with this being the last.
Starting with the outer front, the Basilica of Saint Servatius already is an impressively beautiful building with statues of among others Christ and his twelve disciples embedded in the bows above the entry.
However, also inside the church you’ll have plenty to see with the impressive ship from the 11th centry, the 17th century copper chandelier and many chapels.
The fact that the history goes back far in time also becomes clear from the crypt below the priest choir where the holy Saint Servatius is told to be buried in 384.
