The De Haar Castle in Haarzuilens is worth every minute of the 45 minute trip from Utrecht Central Station.
This castle is one of the best maintained ones in the Netherlands and designed by the same architect that designed the Rijksmuseum and Central Station in Amsterdam. During a tour one of the know-it-all (in a good way) guides will tell you all about the rich history of the castle and the nearby park.
Surrounded by a moat and beautiful gardens you can admire the luxurious furniture, art and beautiful carpets that were placed during and after the restoration of the castle ordered by Baron of Zuylen in 1892.

The trees in the park come from the forest on the other side of Utrecht and moving them through Utrecht damaged quite a number of the houses. It went even so far that a number of houses were torn down to help the trees pass through the streets.
Wondering whether the castle is a suitable location to take the kids? With special tours and searches throughout the castle and its gardens, they’re sure to enjoy the fairy tale-like characteristics of this early 20th century destination.
