What many visitors of Maastricht don’t know is that there are many defense tunnels below the city that were dug underground over time. The best example of this can be viewed at the Sint Pietersberg (Mount Saint Peter, two kilometers south of the Helpoort).
The walls of these tunnels have been carved out throughout the centuries and both the marks of artists who made a contribution and wall paintings can still be viewed today.
The Sint Pietersberg you find just south of Maastricht and once you’ve been through the tunnels, you should definitely have a stroll over the green hillside and enjoy the nature that’s available in abundance.
